The holidays are right around the corner, which means many of us will be traveling and leaving our homes open to all kinds of security threats! To make sure you and your home are safe, here are some ideas to implement NOW:
Landscaping: Make sure that any bushes surrounding the perimeter of your house are trimmed BELOW your windows, and are not blocking any exterior lighting. Also, since we live in Texas, our lawns still need to be maintained this time of year, so keep the grass neatly cut and edged before heading out of town! You want people to think you’re still home!
Get to know your neighbors! With online shopping the norm these days, packages are bound to be a regular occurrence on your door step as you shop for your family and friends… and if you’ve been nice vs. “naughty” this year, you may even receive a few packages from others! So, to avoid these getting stolen right off your doorstep, retrieve your packages right away after delivery; and ask your neighbors to bring them in for you if you are going to be gone. Also, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your house in general if you plan on being away for a while… have them bring in your daily mail and bring in your empty trashcans if trash day occurs while you’re away. Nothing says “I’m not home” like empty trash cans sitting out for days and a full mailbox!!
Locks and Lights! Install simple padlocks on any outside fence gates, and motion sensor lights strategically placed in walk ways. Thieves will by-pass a locked gate over an open one… and they will want to avoid being seen at all costs, so motion lights are a great solution.
Cameras and Security Systems: Installing a camera at each entrance of your house is a great way to keep out burglars or dangerous intruders! If they think that there is any way they will be seen OR recorded, they will skip your place. Security systems are a must as well! If possible, get a wireless system so there are no wires to cut to deactivate it. And, if you just can’t afford cameras or a wireless system… FAKE it! Install fake cameras (you can buy them for as low as $10) and put a sign by your front and back doors that advertise a wireless system! At a glance, someone will never know the difference, and will say to themselves, “Why should I take the chance on this house, when the house next door (or down the street, etc.…) doesn’t appear to have any cameras or wireless security?”
Make your home a SMART one! There are several apps for your smart phone that will turn lights on and off, lock doors, close garages, and activate alarms remotely! Invest in some of these! You can even take it a bit further and install keypads on your doors, which require a code to get in. You can receive a text message each time someone comes or goes! AND you don’t have to worry about having random keys out there that can often get lost or stolen
I hope you don’t have to deal with any break-ins or theft this year… but these are just a few ideas for you to help keep your home safe and secure this holiday season... Hopefully Santa will be the only one who will be “sneaking” in on Christmas Eve; leaving gifts instead of taking them!! Happy Holidays everyone!
Submitting an offer on a home without ever setting foot inside is not new… and now with the COVID-19 Pandemic, it has become more common place for buyers who simply don't want to take any risks. But is this a smart thing to do?
